Can Wet Belts Snap? Risks, Signs and Prevention

A wet belt does not usually fail without a reason, but the damage can arrive without much warning. So, can wet belts snap? Yes. The most common cause is age and mileage. Rubber compounds gradually degrade through heat cycles and contact with oil. As the belt ages, its surface can soften, crack, fray or shed material. Teeth can also wear or separate from the belt, allowing the timing to jump.

Using the wrong engine oil can accelerate the problem. Wet belt engines are designed around a specific oil specification, not simply a viscosity such as 5W-30. An unsuitable oil may affect the belt material and lead to premature degradation. What happens when a wet belt snaps?

The outcome depends on the engine and the point at which the failure occurs. In an interference engine, the pistons and valves occupy the same space at different times. The timing belt keeps them apart. If it snaps or strips teeth, the camshaft timing is lost and the valves may hit the pistons.
